Upward Sensitivity- a poem by Phil

This poem has been shared by Phil, one of our community members. Phil told us that he enjoyed writing poetry and song lyrics when he was younger, but imposter syndrome made it difficult to contribute to the Noticeboard at first. We are so glad he decided to give it a go. His poem explores the emotional cycle of living with sound sensitivity and the challenges this can bring in daily life. We are proud to share it here, and we know many people in our community will relate to the feelings he describes.

Upward Sensitivity
by Phil

Silence neverlasting
The footsteps begin
Each tap ripples down
Pulses through sinew
Stabs into a nerve

What rules must apply
Which conventions are kept
Is anger with reason?
Must I live with such pain?
No answers, no relief

Then one day too much
Other nerves all too frayed
Pain turns to anger
Then on to be Rage
Another hole in my wall

Another time comes
Shame and regret
Fear of my anger
Sorrow in my pain
Hide from it all

Calm times bring old thoughts
Of fair diplomacy
Deep breaths calm the heart
Help climb all the steps
Polite request for relief

Later during review
Pride peeks it's head through
I recall the whole journey
Ever single raw feel
Wheel turns, go round again
